Questions about getting a home

How do I apply for a home?

Most of our homes are let through Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire East Council, and Warrington Borough Council. We also advertise some homes on Rightmove, so it’s worth checking regularly.

Where do I register for housing?

You’ll need to register with your local council, as we don’t manage waiting lists ourselves:

Cheshire West & Chester: Apply through the West Cheshire Homes system

Cheshire East: Apply through the council’s housing system

Warrington: Apply via Warrington Borough Council’s affordable homes portal

What happens after my application is accepted?

Once your registration is approved by your council and you’re offered a property, we will:

  • Carry out affordability and eligibility checks (this may include a credit check).
  • Ask for one month’s rent in advance when you sign your tenancy agreement, either in person or online.
  • Check the home to make sure it meets our standards and complete any essential work before you move in.

You can read more in our Empty Homes Standard

How do I start my search for a home?

You can begin by registering with your local council or by checking our available properties online.

What should I do if I’m homeless or at risk of homelessness?

If you are homeless or think you may become homeless within 56 days, your local council can help. Contact the Housing Options team as soon as possible:

Cheshire West & Chester: Complete the online self‑referral form

Cheshire East: Details available on their website

Warrington: Advice and support available through the council’s website

Renting Garages

We have garages located in the Northwich, Winsford, Frodsham, Weaverham and surrounding areas. These aren’t just for our residential tenants, even if you don’t rent a home from us, you can still apply to rent a garage.

You can rent a garage plot and put your own garage on it (or use it as a parking space), with rent from as little as £10 per week.

Please note: there may not always be a garage available in your preferred area and on receipt of your application you may be added to the waiting list until one becomes available, at which point we will contact you.

Apply here to download the garage application form and email it to enquiries@wvht.co.uk or contact us on 0300 303 9848.
