80th Anniversary of VE Day

Today marks VE Day - or Victory in Europe Day -  the day towards the end of World War Two (WWII) when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end.

On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before.

A two-minute national silence will be held today - 8 May at 12 noon (UK time), to remember and thank those who fought for our freedom.

Did you know, housing has a close link to World War II? After World War II, England faced an acute housing shortage due to war damage, halted construction during wartime, and returning service personnel needing homes. As a result, the government initiated a massive housebuilding program, including specific provisions for key workers—essential public sector workers like teachers, nurses, police officers, and transport staff. Some of our homes were built during this period.
