Where an apprenticeship could lead!
“Although I couldn’t have guessed it would lead me to being a director, what I did know at the time was that my apprenticeship was opening doors. I could feel I was opening myself up to more opportunities, and it would put me in a good position for getting a job.”
What he particularly appreciated was the ability to learn so much about the many aspects of building construction, maintenance, and project management.
Today, Gareth says: “I still believe that what I got from an apprenticeship is the single most worthwhile thing I have done for my career. That’s why I’m massively passionate about the valuable experience apprenticeships give young people.”
As he progressed on his four-year course, he realised that the blend of work and training inspired him to carry on with his education, too.
Gareth added: “I was learning while getting practical work experience – it was great for me and gave me an appetite to go on and do evening school afterwards, where I learnt about project management.”
With his first-hand practical experience, he was able to progress to a property and construction supervisor role, and it was from there that he transitioned into the managerial and strategic side of the industry. His first manager role was with contracts, and from there he hasn't stopped climbing the ladder – becoming a Housing Property Manager, then Head of Service and finally where he is today as Executive Director.
Gareth then joined Weaver Vale Housing Trust in 2018 after time at South Liverpool Housing.
Gareth emphasises that there is no right or wrong way to enter the working world, but is full of praise for apprenticeships, saying “they’re a brilliant option for people to gain skills while earning, and get a route into work.”
He added: “I hope the future of the Weaver Vale Housing Trust’s Apprenticeship Plan will see us continue to grow a skilled workforce, enabling and equipping colleagues with the resources, skills, and experience to deliver excellent services to our customers.”
