We recently spoke to Claire about her experience of losing her job during Covid, the impact it had on her family and the services we offer to tenants in this situation. Currently UK unemployment is sitting at 4.7%*, equating to 1.6million people being out of work. Being made redundant is all too familiar for many people, and with the Government Furlough scheme ending this month, many are predicting this figure will increase.
Our range of additional support services in the Cheshire and Warrington areas are for both tenants and the wider community and our message is clear, we're here to listen, support and advise. Our specialist support teams can help with money advice, benefit support, cv building and job applications, plus alot more.

“I was working at a job for 14 years that I loved, but ended up being no good for my mental health so I decided to leave. It was scary leaving a job that I had known for so long I wasn’t sure what to do next. I found another job, it wasn’t what I wanted to be doing but it brought money in which was the main thing. Then the coronavirus hit and I was made redundant. I knew it would be hard to find work during this time, so I took what I could and started delivering for Morrisons like many people did during this time. There were people from all different working backgrounds doing the same as me to get by during this difficult time.
Being a Weaver Vale tenant for 18 years, I knew that they had support teams available but I never needed them before, but now was my chance to ask for help. I got in touch with the money matters team to help find what support was available for my rent, they put me in touch with the Employment Horizons Team that help WVHT customers to find employment. A lovely lady called Christine contacted me to help update my CV and apply for jobs.
She informed me of a job that was going at the Trust on a temporary basis, working in the customer hub team. I wanted to get back into admin role, so this seemed a perfect place to start. I applied and was successful and started my new role.
During this time I was living at home with my two sons in our 2 bed house. Being over crowded and all being stuck at home due to pandemic was starting to take its toll. Whilst working with Christine to find a job, she also let me know that I could apply for a transfer due to my eldest being 16 years old and being over crowded.
I went onto West Cheshire Homes and bid on a few properties and one became available but just didn’t feel right for us. I then got a phone call from Katrina in the lettings team at WVHT and asked if I wanted to see a property on the Grange in Winsford. I knew straight away it was perfect and would be our forever home. It was in the area that I grew up in as a child and I knew some of the neighbours already.
When I found out I was successful and the house would be ours I cried, it finally felt like things were looking up for us. My boys were so excited to be moving into their new home and able to decorate their own bedrooms.
I have now been offered a permanent position at Weaver Vale in my role and I couldn’t be happier. I can use my experience to help other people going through similar situations and explain that there is help out there and to ask.
All the teams I have dealt with at Weaver Vale have been fantastic. They have always kept me up to date with information and given me so much support to get me to where I am today. I’ll be forever thankful and excited to see what the future holds for me and my family.”
