Family, Food and Fun comes to Wharton

Families in Wharton will be able to enjoy free meals and activities during the summer holidays.

Weaver Vale Housing Trust, The Welcome Network and Healthbox have joined forces to launch the ‘Family, Food and Fun’ programme, which will be held at the Willow Wood Community Primary School during August.

The sessions have been made possible thanks to funding from ‘Feeding Britain’ – a charity which aims to tackle ‘holiday hunger’.

As well as settling down to a healthy meal, families will be able to take part in a variety of activities which are being provided by Cheshire Fire Service, Mersey Forest, Sure Start, DW13 Fitness, Cheshire Police and community volunteers.

A recent survey found 60 per cent of families earning under £25,000 struggled to afford food over the summer.

Community projects that provide meals and activities during the school holidays have been found to deliver hugely beneficial effects for children’s health, physical activity levels, educational progress and social skills.

The summer break is particularly hard, as families can struggle to cover the additional food costs over six weeks, particularly in the absence of free school meals.

One consequence of that struggle is a widening of inequalities in the classroom – with some children returning to school hungry, sluggish and unprepared to learn, falling several weeks further behind their peers.

Georgia Winstanley, Customer Engagement Officer at Weaver Vale Housing Trust said:

“We are all well aware of the massive impact holiday hunger can have on families and we wanted to do our bit to help.

“This is why we are running a lunch club over a few days in August during the school holidays to ensure that families are not only getting a hot, nutritious meal for free, but they can take part in activities and access the right support services.

“We have been very lucky to receive support from Feeding Britain, as well as other local groups and organisaitons who are giving up their time to support this scheme.”

The ‘Family, Food and Fun’ programme will kick off with an Under 8s Teddy Bears Picnic at the Willow Wood School on Wednesday August 15 (12-3pm).
